The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Program Description:

The SCA is seeking a motivated SCA Leader to assist with Urban Forestry Service work in Stamford Connecticut. SCA Members will serve in Environmental Justice Communities and Parks throughout the City of Stamford including Mill River Park.

Program Dates: 03/25/2025-11/25/2025

Training Dates: 03/10/2025-03/22/2025

Location: Camp Butternut Springs 650 N. 175 W. Valparaiso, IN 46385

The primary duties of this position will include:

  • Tree Planting
  • Tree Care and Maintenance: Pruning, Watering, Root Flare Restoration and Mulching
  • Invasive Species Management and Mitigation
  • Permaculture
  • Driving an SCA Provided vehicle to facilitate crew member transportation needs and to transport tools, materials, water tanks and trees throughout the City of Stamford.
  • Supervising a crew of young adult members in Urban Forestry Service Work.

This position will generally require walking up to 5 miles per day over uneven and improved terrain, working in urban parks and natural spaces while working in a small team based setting. The service work will be physically demanding at times and may include repetitive tasks associated with the care of existing trees on a recurring basis.

This position is ideal for someone with a can-do attitude, who can solve problems and work as part of a team. We’re looking for someone who is willing to work hard, and who can get the job done safely and with minimal instruction. This position is a good match for someone interested in pursuing a career in Urban and Community Forestry.

Leader Required Qualifications

Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more; Must be able to attend Crew Leader training; Must be a minimum of 21 years of age; Must have the ability to legally work in the US; Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and pass SCA Motor Vehicle Report standards; Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards; Housing is not provided, Leader must be locally available

Leader Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching or environmental education preferred; Leaders will work in new outdoor environments, being excited and open to new experiences is strongly desired; Experience working in a team; Open to learning new skills, more about conservation, and environmental education
