C.4 Forest Management Planning in a Changing Climate
Effective planning is a critical part of our lives. Planning for the stewardship of our conserved lands is no different. Your organization has protected tracts of forest land—now what is the vision for that property 20, 50, 100 years from now? Is there a plan in place to achieve that vision? Looking that far ahead we must consider a future of unprecedented climatic change. Forests can be part of a climate-change solution because of their ability to sequester and store carbon. But in order to provide these services, the forest must also remain resilient to the anticipated challenges ahead. A Climate-Smart Forestry strategy involves describing long-term desired conditions and identifying management practices to achieve them. This presentation will present adaptive forest management planning and explain how to incorporate long-term visions, particularly with respect to climate change. Then describe short-term desired conditions, identify appropriate management practices and foster their implementation.
