C.7 Harnessing Drones in Conservation: An Efficient & Cost-Effective Approach to Overcome Land Management Challenges
Land conservation is a challenging task plagued by limited funding and resources. Conventional monitoring and surveying methods are impractical when managing large land areas. Innovative remote sensing techniques are thus required to collect data in a repeated fashion without compromising spatial details and geographical extent to effectively steer management decision making. Remote sensing modes, especially drones, are growing in popularity through the means of on-demand data collection from a top-down view. Data collection and analysis requires minimal training to perform. Consumer-grade drones require limited investment, making them ideal for use in resource-constrained situations. In this workshop, we will showcase consumer-grade to state-of-the-art research-grade drones with a variety of sensors discussing usage in multiple conservation and management applications. We will elaborate on one of our on-going research projects, which explores how drone technology is used to study beaver ecosystems in Connecticut through multiple modes of remote sensing.
