A.5 Invasive Plant Mapping and Riparian Buffer Management
The Connecticut National Estuarine Research Reserve (CT NERR) encompasses roughly 52,000 acres of upland, marsh, and open water habitat in Southeastern CT. The Connecticut River Gateway Commission was created in 1973 to protect the natural and traditional riverway scene on 59 shoreline miles. NERR is working to quantify the spread and variety of invasive plants in coastal habitats to help plan control and eradication efforts. Using Epicollect5, a free mobile app, a team sampled 380 sites over two summer seasons recording field data and photographs. Educators from NERR and UConn’s Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR) will describe this work and how it may be valuable in your community. The Gateway Commission will stress why native species are important for restoration and riparian buffer plantings. This workshop will be informative for land trusts, municipalities, conservation organizations, and others who wish to control invasives and restore native habitat.
