A.8 Land Justice for Land Trusts: Expanding Access to the Lands that Sustain Us
What is land justice and why does it matter for conservation land trusts? Conservation efforts are essential to promote climate resilient ecosystems and healthy and sustainable communities, including resilient local food systems. As land trusts advance their missions they have an opportunity to consider how their work can more fully benefit all of the people living in their communities, especially groups that have been historically excluded from owning and stewarding land. Join a conversation with local land trust leaders grappling with new frameworks and approaches for land access and affordable secure land tenure. This interactive workshop will explore what land justice means, why it’s important, and share key challenges and examples in practice. The session will invite participants to draw connections between land justice and their core missions, and reflect on how land trusts can integrate land conservation for human and planetary health to achieve multiple benefits – including environmental sustainability, social equity, and community well-being.
