Adaptive Forest Management for a Changing Climate
May 31 | 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Join us for a guided field tour exploring adaptive forest management at two demonstration sites: Mohegan State Forest and the Hoffman Evergreen Preserve. This tour offers a firsthand look at forest adaptation strategies designed to enhance forest health and structure, habitat quality, and build resilience against climate change. In Mohegan State Forest, learn about how UCONN and CT DEEP foresters have done long-term forestry planning, sustainable harvesting, and wildlife habitat improvements aimed at maintaining a healthy, diverse forest ecosystem. At Avalonia Land Conservancy’s Hoffman Preserve, you’ll see how a land trust can utilize proactive management—including thinning, plantings, and habitat restoration—addressing both current and future climate challenges. As we walk these forested landscapes, we’ll discuss real-world solutions for improving forest health, from species selection to invasive control. This is an opportunity to gain practical knowledge that can inform stewardship decisions for your own properties and conservation efforts.
