Pathways to Nature: Bird & Hike with Middlebury Land Trust & Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center
May 2
CLCC is partnering with the Middlebury Land Trust to host a special field trip for the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center of Waterbury. Participants will visit the Sperry Preserve for a guided birding and hiking event, which will also include a picnic lunch.
A unique aspect of this outing is its focus on cultural connection. Culturally informed environmental educators will co-lead the hike, facilitating discussions on the relationship between Caribbean-Americans and nature and helping the youth connect with the land while exploring their indigenous Taino roots.
The hike will be co-led by:
- Alice Hallaran, Co-President of the Middlebury Land Trust
- Rafael Feliciano-Roman, Staff member at the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center
This program is designed by the CLCC to enhance access to nature for urban youth. By providing a bus from the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center directly to the preserve, the program eliminates transportation barriers that often prevent access to conserved lands. The ultimate goal is to introduce these young leaders to birdwatching and hiking, foster a deeper appreciation for land conservation, and establish a lasting collaborative relationship between the youth team and the Middlebury Land Trust
Note: This event is exclusively for the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center’s Black and Taino Youth Leadership Team and is not open to the general public.
