The former property of Judge Constance Baker Motley (1921-2005), located on Cedar Lake Rd. in Chester, was recently selected as an historic site for the CT Freedom Trail, a state designation for a select few sites that “embody the struggle toward freedom and human dignity, celebrate the accomplishments of the state’s African American community and promote heritage tourism.”

Purchased in 2016 by the Chester Land Trust, the site embodies the heroic life of Judge Motley, a civil rights attorney who later served 38 years as a New York Federal District Judge — the first African American woman to hold such a position.
