A message from Lori Faeth, Land Trust Alliance Senior Director of Government Relations

In Connecticut, the federal conservation easement tax incentive is an important land conservation tool. It has empowered landowners, boosting the number of acres conserved annually. Unfortunately, a few bad actors continue to put the incentive at risk by unlawful profiteering at the expense of hardworking Connecticans. Luckily, there is a legislative solution.

In June, a bipartisan group of senators and representatives introduced the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act (S. 2256) — legislation that would halt the abuse while ensuring that important tax incentives remain available for genuinely charitable endeavors. The legislation is targeted directly at the abuse and protects truly philanthropic donations of easements.

This important legislation is a part of the reconciliation package currently under negotiation in Congress. We need your help to ensure it stays in the final bill.

Those working in opposition to the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act are targeting a number of senators, including Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, so I am writing today with a simple request that will only take one minute of your time.

The Land Trust Alliance asks that you, as a Connecticut resident and a passionate land conservationist, email Sens. Blumenthal and Murphy’s offices and let them know:

  1. You are a resident of Connecticut;
  2. You believe strongly in the benefits of private land conservation; and
  3. You strongly support the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act (S. 2256) being kept in the reconciliation package because it will put an end to this egregious abuse and recoup the billions of dollars in revenue lost to these bad actors.

For Sen. Blumenthal

Emails should be sent to Sen. Blumenthal’s chief of staff, Joel Kelsey, at joel_kelsey@blumenthal.senate.gov. You should copy his legislative assistant, Thomas Story, at thomas_story@blumenthal.senate.gov and his state director, Richard Kehoe, at richard_kehoe@blumenthal.senate.gov. In your email, please also request that Sen. Blumenthal support and cosponsor the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act.

For Sen. Murphy

Emails should be sent to Sen. Murphy’s chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, at allison_herwitt@murphy.senate.gov. You should copy his legislative aide, Misha Lehrer, at misha_lehrer@murphy.senate.gov and his state director, Kenny Curran, at kenny_curran@murphy.senate.gov. In your email, please also request that Sen. Murphy support and cosponsor the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act.

Once you’ve completed this request, I ask that you let me know you took action. Email me at policy@lta.org.
