What a fantastic way to welcome the Spring birding season!

This past Sunday, April 27th, a vibrant group of aspiring birders gathered at Westmoor Park in West Hartford for “Birds Be Black… and so are We,” a special birding and hiking event hosted by Ashley and Erika from Outdoor Afro, the Sovereign Land Trust, and CLCC.

The morning was filled with the delightful sights and sounds of nature. It was a beautiful experience of connection, laughter, and shared learning, embodying the spirit of community and the joy of discovering the natural world together.

This all-ages, mobility-friendly event, sponsored by the Black-led Connecticut land trust, Sovereign Land Trust, and led by Yaw and the CLCC, provided a welcoming space for both experienced and budding birders. Attendees learned valuable birding tips, including how to use binoculars and identify birds by their calls and appearance. The slow-paced walk allowed for mindful observation along the accessible paths of Westmoor Park.

A highlight of the morning was a lively discussion about the mesmerizing phenomenon of murmurations, those incredible aerial displays created by flocks of birds moving in unison.

An impressive 18 different bird species were identified throughout the event, including Geese, Mallards, Mourning Doves, Turkey Vultures, Ospreys, Red-tailed Hawks, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Black-capped Chickadees, Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, Northern Mockingbirds, American Robins, American Goldfinches, Chipping Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds, Black-and-white Warblers, and Yellow-rumped Warblers.

This event also marked Ashley’s last with Outdoor Afro, making the day even more special. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who came out to make this gathering so memorable. It was a powerful reminder of the beauty and biodiversity that surrounds us and the importance of creating inclusive spaces to connect with nature.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to explore and celebrate the natural wonders of Connecticut with CLCC and our partners!
